The first rescueswimmers were recruited to the job in the beginning of the 1980´s. The parlament of Finland desided that the Turku air patrolflight had to be founded to take care of  maritime search and rescue helicopters in Finland. The rescuehelicopter comittee recommended that the helicopter type shold be the russian Mi-8. The early years were operated Mi-8 helicopters and only five “swimmers”.

After a few years of operating, a new committee was set by the ministry of interior. The committee recommended more people to be reqruited and new SAR helicopters to be bought. The first AB412 arrived to Finland in 1985. The Mi-8 were gradually replaced by  AS332 Super Puma helicopters by the end of the 1980´s.
